It has begun!

Good evening!

As the more serious work on JessiKA2 started I decided to keep track of it via these small updates. Main reason for these reports is to force myself to continue working on this project.

JessiKA2 is my pet project and as such is always behind everything else. Finally I had enough time to write the story, quests, locations, characters... It sounds as a lot but in reality it's only the beginning. My experience in the game industry is that for many firms these segments I've already made would be more than enough to start a real production of the project... which often leads to total chaos, crunch, mayhem... and eventually a buggy final product... if it gets finished at all. That is why I'll do JessiKA 2 properly – like I did with Alicia Griffith: Lakeside Murder – I'll make entire Game Design Document with all the details explained – both gameplay and technical details. So even if I never finish the game I'll be able to share this GDD and hopefully it will serve as a helpful example for others in organizing game production of their own.

JessiKA2 will be adventure game with point and click mechanics, but also with casually implemented RPG and fighting systems. Game will be similar to JessiKA1 (pilot game episode) but with more character and item interactions, more quests, more locations and much longer gameplay.

Point and click elements are designed not to be too tedious, RPG elements will be extremely simple, and fighting mechanics will be very easy. This means my goal is to make JessiKA2 as funny and entertaining as possible without frustrating the players. And I'll make a walkthrough in case people get stuck...

Single playthrough playing time should be at least 3 hours (if you are not running through it while using walkthrough).

Our main protagonist is Jessie. She is cool and sexy and tough and doesn't care much about what other people think, so there will be some foul language and not very politically correct statements. Like I said – she doesn't care much about others... so this game will not be made for sensitive people to play.

As with JessiKA1 – a pilot game which I used as a test for RPG maker V engine and its abilities – I'm planning to use RPG maker V for JessieKA2 too.

This is not set is stone since RPGMV has its own issues regarding this type of games. This is prominently seen in item manipulation – player needs a lot of clicks in order to make simple point and click interaction. Also branching dialogue system is slow to implement and is prone to errors. You, as a developer, need to be very concentrated and everything should be well defined in order to avoid errors while "combining" dialogue choices in the game engine itself.

I will try to find good plugins for RPGMV to resolve these issues.

In the meantime (between JessiKA1 and JessiKA2) I've learned Unity and C# so JessieKA 2 could be made in Unity and would probably be more user-friendly. But for that I would need much more time and since I have no financial support for this project this would be a huge problem. Also not using RPGMV would mean entire game graphics should be made from scratch, which is something I can't afford right now.

So, there is 95% chance I'll be using RPGMV for this game. I'll also need to make and/or buy specific tilesets and character sprite sheets. There will also be sound effects I'll need to make.

If I'll use RPGMV as a game engine, I believe game of this magnitude could be finished and tested in no more than 6 months of constant work by me as a single person working on it. But I need to live of something so this silly nuisance called my life will made production longer. Hopefully I will finish this game but sadly I can't be 100% sure about it.

Before starting with main production I need to make entire GDD with all details explained and huge amount of dialogues written. I won't be able to hire English proofreader so it will be in my bad English... which should give a personal touch to overall feeling of the game... yay!

Expectations...

I have no hope this game will be a hit. Actually I don't think many people will ever hear of it let alone play it since I don't have the means to promote it. Also I'm aware adventures with point and click mechanics are not extremely popular these days and also many people will not be playing it since it will be made in RPGMV...

So why am I doing this you ask?

Because I'm crazy... I want to make games, have plenty of experience and ides but got extremely disappointed with game industry in too many aspects to talk about it all. It just makes me sad and angry...

In my time in game industry I worked as 3d modeler, texturer, scripter, animator, game designer, produced my own commercial game, and lastly learned to program in C# to make a game from scratch in less than a year. I worked on more than 15 released projects and I think I am experienced enough to say that I know a lot about entire process of game production. Sadly this is something frowned upon by managing caste in the game industry nowadays. So I'll use my knowledge to make this game just for fun and with no pressure...

I hope developing this game will be positive experience for me and fun experience for players while playing it, as it was with JessiKA1, and hopefully I will make a series of JessieKA games. I'm aware this is not likely but I can always hope...

Stay tuned...
